Find Top Quality FREE Audiobooks by Steve J Cowan
May 10th, 2009 by Suzanna

Audiobooks have, over the past few years, become an amazing success story, even though the recording of the spoken word, as opposed to music, has been around for over 100 years.

Indeed, it is fair to say that audiobooks have really brought the recorded spoken word into the public consciousness, even though a substantial portion of our cultural heritage from the last century is already recorded in enormous collections of spoken word materials.

Unfortunately, a large percentage of these historical audio tracts are hidden away in private collections, museums and so on, representing huge quantities of priceless historical artifacts that are currently unavailable to academics, scholars and the like.

Nevertheless, audiobooks have brought spoken word recordings to the attention of the audio loving public over the past few years, so, why have they become so popular, and why now?

Answering that, the wrong way around, ‘why now’ can be answered with two simple words – mp3’s and the internet.

Mp3 recording technology is only 30 years old, but it began to revolutionize worldwide listening practices almost as soon as it was invented, simply because it reduced massive digital sound files down to manageable levels.

Generally, mp3 files are twelve times smaller than other audio and video file types, because they get rid of all the sounds from the original recording that are beyond human hearing.

The internet is a perfect tool for working with these mp3’s, allowing anyone with a connection to instantly download mp3 files, and then play them back on their PC, on a mobile mp3 player or on a standard CD, after the mp3 is burned on to it.

Of course, all of the above applies equally well to music or to audiobooks, so why the current boom in audiobooks?

Well, audiobooks have many in-built advantages over their written page counterparts. Some of these advantages are:

They take up no space on your shelves or in your home. Perhaps an important factor at a time when average living spaces are gradually becoming smaller.

They have no weight or bulk. An audiobook is nothing more than a digital file, so that you can conveniently carry it around with you on a mobile mp3 or CD player.

They are not easily damaged. There are no pages to be ripped or worn out.

They allow you to ‘multi-task’, which is becoming an ever more important requirement of every day life. You can dig the garden, walk the dog, and go to the mall, all whilst listening to an audiobook.

Effectively, an audiobook offers all of the advantages and benefits of a written word book such as being able to improve oneself through further education, or to catch up with literary classics that you somehow missed, all without the downsides of a large, bulky book

Another great advantage of audiobooks, and perhaps the best reason for the current audiobook explosion, is that there are lots of sources to find completely free books all over the internet.

Compare that to your local book store. When was the last time they gave you something for free?

By simply running a search through any of the major search engines, you would be able to turn up many, many sites giving away free audiobooks. Obviously, this ability to get free samples before deciding whether to invest you’re hard earned cash in audiobooks is a major plus point.

There are, however, two points to draw to your attention about many of the free audiobook download sites.

First, many of the sites offer the audiobooks for free for one reason. The quality of the recording and (often) the reading is so poor that no-one would ever consider paying for it!

Second, many of the texts that are read to create these audiobooks are open source works, meaning that there either never was a copyright on the title, or that it has expired. In either case, we are talking about a very old works that are usually very average indeed (otherwise, they would have a value, and still be copyrighted!)!

Audiobooks are definitely something that you should try if you have not already done so, especially as you can get great quality titles for free.

But, just make sure to look for good quality audiobooks for your first taster of exactly what they have to offer, and you cannot go far wrong.

How does an iPod Work?
May 8th, 2009 by Suzanna

How does an iPod Work?
An iPod is a portable device that is used to play audio files of MP3 or AAC format. Released in 2001, the iPod’s of today come in a variety of shapes and sizes with varying storage capacities, right from the 512MB iPod Shuffle to the 160 GB iPod Classic! IPod’s are compatible with PCs running Windows 2000 or Windows XP and Macintosh computers running Mac OS X. here is more on how iPod’s work!

IPod’s started off as portable music players, but today they can be used to play movies, view photos, play games, store text documents, set reminders and can also be used as an alarm clock! A regular iPod uses a tiny hard disk for storage; however the iPod Shuffle uses a kind of memory known as flash memory. Unlike regular computer memory, flash memory is much faster; uses less power and does not get reset on being switched off. Content is transferred from your Computer to your iPod using a USB cable.

IPod and iTunes

The best part about the iPod is its simplicity. All iPod’s are completely integrated with iTunes. ITunes is a software created by Apple, which is used to add and remove, content from an iPod. This happens automatically without any intervention from the user. With iTunes you can “rip” music from CD’s into MP3 or AAC formats to your computer.

When your iPod is connected to your PC, iTunes automatically updates your music library, keeping track of how often you played a song and also adds new songs and play lists to your iPod. An iPod can also be used on multiple computers; however synchronization occurs only in 1 direction. You cannot transfer songs from your iPod to a computer. However, the iPod can be used as a hard-drive to transfer data over different computers but will not be able to play this data.

Supported Audio Formats

The iPod can play AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) format in addition to standard MP3 audio format. Audio files in ACC format being smaller and of the same quality as compared to MP3 files, makes song management on your iPod much quicker. In addition to this, iTunes comes with a built in converter that is capable of converting most audio format to MP3 or AAC.

Skip Protection

The iPod is designed for people with an active lifestyle. It is compact and light enough to take with you wherever you go. In addition to the hard drive, the iPod has a memory cache, which is made up of solid-state memory. Therefore, it has no mechanical or moving parts and is not affected by movement of the device. The iPod offers up to 20 minutes of skip protection, so whether it’s walking or mountain climbing u can do so without skipping a beat!

Non-Music FeaturesVideos – The iPod can be used to play videos in MPEG-4 or H.264 codecs. Adding videos to your iPod can be a little inconvenient as the above formats are not easily available. But never fear there’s a wide range of video converters available for free on the Internet.Audio Books – The iPod can also play Audio books very conveniently. When you have stopped listening, it keeps track of the exact point and chapter that you were on, so you can resume listening from where you left off. Most players do not come with this feature and users are left searching for the point they left off. In addition to this there is also an option to play audio books faster than normal the normal rate, which is pretty useful when there’s a lot of material. So people that’s all that there’s to know about the working of your iPod.

Advantages of Learning Through Audio Books
by: Andrew Corner

Books on tapes, audio books, and other audio learning devices are fast gaining popularity in the education field. In using audio book learning systems for the purpose of education, parents, teachers, and educators are relieved that its benefits are numerous. The increasing success of starting and struggling readers is often credited to using audio books as part of their learning process. Aside from this, there are other advantages in using audio materials not only in schools, but also in homes and other places.

In education, it is generally cheaper to provide a single set of books on tape, audio books, and other audio learning materials for the class to share. Money is saved because individual books are not needed. Plus, the teacher will be able to do more with his or her time while the class listens to audio lessons. Researches also show that a large percentage- 85%- of our learning and knowledge actually comes from listening. Another plus factor for using audio books is the improvement of the students’ listening and comprehension skills. They are compelled to listen attentively since they cannot follow what is being played on tape with a book. In addition, studies have proved that reading beginners see printed words as disconnected symbols. Through the aid of audio learning, the rhythm of the speech and its patterns are made distinct, thereby making the printed material flowing and easily absorbed. What’s more, early readers can learn the pronunciation of words through listening to books on tapes. This minimizes the risk of losing interest in reading. Difficulty in pronouncing words and the pressure of pronouncing words correctly are two of the most common reason why people lose interest in reading. Also, even if the reader does not understand the definite meaning of words or of what they’re hearing, they will have an idea about its meaning depending on how it is said on tape.

The importance of books on tape, audio books, and audio learning devices are not confined to the classroom. Homeschoolers often use audio books during their classes at home. Advantages for using audio books include the development of interest for literature. It is common knowledge that children loved to be read to. Audio books and learning are a great way to expose them to literatures other than the traditional fairy tales. The danger of them being bored is very minimal as professional actors usually narrates and portrays the characters. Interesting sound effects are also added for additional enjoyment. Plus, children at an early age will learn to associate literature with a fun activity. For adults, books on tape, audio books, and audio learning devices are great ways to learn a foreign language. It is proven that learning a new language is easier if you hear it often. Also, the need to enroll in a language course is not necessary unless it is a certification that you want.

Reasons for using books on tapes, audio books, and audio learning devices are many; but still, education is the greatest. These reasons should and hopefully will provide readers with ideas on how important, and fun, audio learning is when used for education. A hoped-for and expected effect of books on tape and audio books are that children and students read at home with willingness and interest.
